DMRC Launches Mid-Life Refurbishment of Blue Line Trains to Boost Safety and Passenger Experience
The upgraded systems also enable real-time communication between passengers and train operators during emergencies, significantly enhancing safety protocols

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has initiated a comprehensive mid-life refurbishment programme for its Blue Line trains, aimed at enhancing passenger safety, comfort, and overall travel experience.
Under this initiative, the oldest rolling stock (RS-1) trains are being upgraded with modern technologies and improved amenities to ensure continued reliability and alignment with current standards.
As part of the broader refurbishment plan, DMRC is upgrading a total of 70 trains across the Red and Blue Lines in phased stages. In the first phase, 12 trains were refurbished, followed by 18 trains in the second phase. Work on an additional 9 trains is set to begin shortly, with another 9 to follow. In the third phase, 22 Blue Line trains will undergo refurbishment by November 2027.
These trains, inducted between 2002 and 2007, have completed nearly two decades of service. The upgrades are designed to bring them at par with modern rolling stock standards.
Vikas Kumar, Managing Director of DMRC, recently inspected the first refurbished train of the third phase before its induction into passenger service. With this milestone, a total of 31 trains have already been upgraded, reflecting DMRC’s sustained commitment to modernization.
