BCCL Intensifies Monitoring After Surface Cracks Appear on NH-32 at Kenduadih, Dhanbad

Residents and commuters have been advised to strictly avoid the restricted zone

Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) has stepped up surveillance and response measures following the emergence of surface cracks along National Highway-32 near the old GM Bungalow at Kenduadih, an area already identified as geotechnically unstable.

The cracks were detected during a routine inspection carried out this morning by the BCCL Colliery Management team. Notably, this is the same location where a gas emission incident was reported on December 3, 2025. Since then, BCCL has been undertaking sustained scientific interventions in collaboration with expert institutions to manage the situation.

Recognizing the seriousness of the development, BCCL acted swiftly in coordination with the district administration. As an immediate precautionary measure, the affected stretch of NH-32 has been blocked and barricaded to ensure public safety.

Earlier, on April 5, 2026, cracks caused by geological and fire-induced subsidence in the old GM Bungalow complex had extended to nearby shops, raising concerns about the stability of the surrounding infrastructure. The Director General of Mines Safety (DGMS) has already declared this stretch of NH-32 near Kenduadih as geotechnically unstable.

To address the issue comprehensively, BCCL has engaged Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) Dhanbad to conduct a detailed scientific study. The assessment will evaluate the stability of the affected road section and recommend long-term remedial measures. Further actions will be taken based on the institute’s technical findings.

BCCL reiterated that the safety of its employees and the general public remains its top priority. The company continues to work closely with all relevant agencies and expert bodies to contain risks and implement a permanent solution.

Residents and commuters have been advised to strictly avoid the restricted zone and adhere to safety advisories issued by the administration. Meanwhile, security and monitoring measures in the area have been intensified to prevent any untoward incidents.
