STEM Immersion Programme-cum-Workshop Organized Jointly by BCCL and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad

An initiative to inspire students towards innovation and scientific temper through science and technology-based education

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-ISM) Dhanbad, in collaboration with Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), organized a one-day STEM Immersion Programme-cum-Workshop on “Promoting STEM Education for Students from Underprivileged and Project Affected Families (PAP) in BCCL Areas through Logical, Digital and Experiential Learning Methods” under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of BCCL at the Penman Auditorium.

The programme aimed to foster interest, curiosity, and innovative thinking in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among students from government schools, underprivileged communities, and Project Affected Families (PAP) residing in BCCL operational areas.

Around 550 students from various schools across BCCL operational regions participated in the programme. As part of the immersive learning experience, students visited several innovation and research facilities at IIT (ISM), including the TEXMiN Innovation Hub, Geological Museum, Atal Community Innovation Centre (ACIC), Robotics Laboratory, Central Library, and Student Activity Centre. Mr. Manoj Kumar Agarwal, CMD, BCCL, attended the event as the Chief Guest. The programme was also graced by Dr. Dheeraj Kumar, Deputy Director of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad; Mr. Surendra Bhushan, Head (CSR), BCCL; heads of various departments of IIT (ISM); distinguished faculty members; school representatives; and other dignitaries.

Addressing the gathering, CMD Mr. Manoj Kumar Agarwal stated that the programme was not merely an educational event but a meaningful effort to nurture curiosity, confidence, and innovative thinking among students. He emphasized that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are shaping the future of the world, and every child—irrespective of social or economic background—deserves an opportunity to participate in that future.

He highlighted that the joint initiative of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and BCCL is playing a significant role in engaging students through logical thinking, digital learning tools, and hands-on educational activities. Referring to BCCL’s social commitments, he noted that the company continues to work actively in the areas of education, healthcare, digital learning infrastructure, smart classrooms, and community development through its CSR programmes.

Mr. Agarwal encouraged students to remain curious, work hard, and believe in their abilities to achieve greater goals. During the interaction session, he inspired students to pursue their ambitions with dedication and perseverance and urged them to contribute actively towards nation-building.

Throughout the programme, concepts of science and mathematics were explained to students through scientific experiments, digital simulations, activity-based learning modules, and interactive sessions. Special emphasis was placed on developing logical and analytical abilities, promoting scientific temper, and motivating students to explore STEM-related careers.

Notably, this BCCL initiative has already benefited approximately 7,450 students from 25 schools across various blocks of Dhanbad district, including Tundi, Nirsa, Jharia, Baghmara, and Dhanbad. Under the programme, science and mathematics are being taught using experimental and activity-based pedagogical methods.

The programme concluded with a message encouraging students to embrace innovation, scientific thinking, and inclusive development. This collaborative initiative by BCCL and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad marks a significant contribution towards empowering society through quality education and experiential learning.
