PESB to Interview 10 Candidates for CMD Post at Northern Coalfields Limited on June 18
The CMD post is currently under the additional charge of Coal India Chairman B. Sai Ram, who previously served as CMD of NCL

Public Sector Headhunter, Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) will conduct interviews on June 18, 2026, for the selection of the next Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), one of Coal India Limited’s major coal-producing subsidiaries. The interviews are scheduled to be held through video conferencing between 8:45 AM and 10:45 AM.
According to an official communication issued by PESB under the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), the Ministry of Coal has been requested to participate in the selection meeting to assist the Board in making its recommendations.
The coveted CMD position at NCL has attracted a strong field of candidates from Coal India subsidiaries as well as other major public sector enterprises. A total of 10 candidates have been shortlisted for the interaction with PESB.

Strategic Importance of the Position
Northern Coalfields Limited, a Miniratna subsidiary of Coal India Limited, operates some of the country’s largest opencast coal mines in the Singrauli region of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The company plays a crucial role in ensuring fuel supply to thermal power plants across India.
The CMD of NCL is responsible for steering the company’s operational, financial, and strategic growth while supporting India’s energy security objectives.
The position has remained vacant since December 2025 after the previous incumbent moved to Coal India Limited, making the upcoming PESB selection particularly significant for the coal sector.
Industry observers will be closely watching the outcome of the June 18 interviews, as the selected candidate will lead one of Coal India’s most productive subsidiaries at a time when the nation continues to focus on energy security and enhanced coal production.
