Ministry of Coal to Organize Third Roadshow on Surface Coal/Lignite Gasification Projects in Mumbai Tomorrow

Industry leaders, investors, technology providers and policymakers to explore opportunities in India's ₹46,000 crore coal gasification initiative aimed at enhancing energy security and reducing import dependence

The Ministry of Coal will organize the third roadshow on the Scheme for Promotion of Surface Coal/Lignite Gasification Projects in Mumbai on June 18, 2026, as part of its continued efforts to accelerate stakeholder participation and investment in India’s coal gasification ecosystem. The event follows successful roadshows held earlier in New Delhi and Hyderabad and is expected to attract key industry stakeholders, investors, technology providers, financial institutions, policy experts, coal sector representatives and state government officials.

The roadshow aims to promote awareness about the government’s ambitious coal gasification programme and facilitate discussions on emerging opportunities in the sector. The initiative is aligned with India’s broader objectives of enhancing energy security, promoting value addition to domestic coal resources and supporting sustainable industrial development.

Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy will grace the event as the Chief Guest. Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, will attend as the Special Guest, while Satish Chandra Dubey, Minister of State for Coal and Mines, will be the Guest of Honour. Senior officials from the Ministry, including Vikram Dev Dutt, Secretary, Ministry of Coal, and Sanoj Kumar Jha, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Coal, will also participate in the deliberations.

Coal gasification is increasingly being recognized as a strategic pathway for cleaner and more efficient utilization of India’s vast coal reserves. The process converts coal into synthesis gas (syngas), which can be used to manufacture a range of high-value products such as methanol, urea, ammonium nitrate, synthetic natural gas and other chemical feedstocks. This opens new opportunities for industrial growth, import substitution and economic value creation.

Recognizing the transformative potential of the technology, the Government of India has approved a ₹46,000 crore initiative to promote Surface Coal/Lignite Gasification Projects. The programme seeks to encourage the establishment of gasification facilities across the country, increase the use of domestic coal in producing strategic industrial inputs, reduce dependence on imports of natural gas, ammonia and methanol, and strengthen the nation’s energy security framework.

To ensure transparency and wider stakeholder participation, the Ministry has already placed the Request for Proposal (RFP) in the public domain and invited comments and suggestions from industry stakeholders.

The Mumbai roadshow reflects the Ministry’s commitment to building a robust coal gasification ecosystem through policy support, technology adoption and industry collaboration. By fostering partnerships and attracting investments, the initiative is expected to play a significant role in advancing the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047, while driving industrial innovation and sustainable economic growth.
