Railways Plans Green Logistics Network to Transport 340 Million Tonnes of Fly Ash Annually
The move aligns with the Government's vision of promoting a circular economy, where industrial by-products are reused productively rather than discarded

In a significant step towards promoting sustainable industrial practices and strengthening India’s circular economy, the Ministry of Railways is working on a large-scale initiative to transport fly ash through the railway network for productive industrial use.
The proposal was reviewed during a high-level meeting chaired by Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw. Union Ministers of State for Railways V. Somanna and Ravneet Singh Bittu also attended the meeting, where plans for creating a dedicated logistics ecosystem for fly ash transportation were discussed.
India’s thermal power plants generate nearly 340 million tonnes of fly ash every year. Traditionally viewed as an industrial waste product, fly ash often accumulates near power plants, posing environmental and land management challenges. The new railway initiative aims to transform this challenge into an opportunity by enabling the efficient movement of fly ash from power plants to industries that utilize it as a valuable raw material.
Under the proposed framework, Indian Railways will develop a dedicated logistics network comprising specialized containers, rail wagons and transportation corridors to facilitate the seamless movement of fly ash across the country. The material will be supplied to industries involved in cement manufacturing, brick production, road construction and various infrastructure projects.
The initiative is expected to provide multiple benefits. By ensuring a reliable and economical supply of fly ash, it can help reduce production costs for cement and construction materials, thereby supporting affordable housing and infrastructure development. At the same time, it will address environmental concerns associated with fly ash disposal.
Officials noted that transporting fly ash through purpose-built rail logistics systems will minimize dust pollution and ensure safe handling of the material during transit. Instead of being treated as waste, fly ash will become an important resource contributing to India’s infrastructure growth.
The move aligns with the Government’s vision of promoting a circular economy, where industrial by-products are reused productively rather than discarded. By connecting power plants with end-user industries through an efficient railway network, Indian Railways is expected to play a crucial role in turning industrial waste into economic value while advancing the country’s sustainability goals.
