Hardeep Singh Puri Visits OIL’s AI-Powered VR Centre ‘Kalpalok’ in Assam, Highlights Role of Technology in Energy Security

Advanced AI and Virtual Reality-based analytics to accelerate hydrocarbon exploration and boost India's domestic energy production

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, on Monday visited Kalpalok, the state-of-the-art Virtual Reality (VR) Centre developed by Oil India Limited (OIL) at Duliajan, Assam. The cutting-edge facility, powered by advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technologies, serves as a critical research, development, and analytical hub for the company.

Kalpalok leverages immersive Virtual Reality technology to create highly sophisticated 3D computer-simulated environments that replicate real-world subsurface geological conditions. The platform enables scientists and engineers to visualize and analyze complex geological, geophysical, and reservoir data in an interactive manner, significantly enhancing exploration and production capabilities.

By integrating multiple datasets into dynamic 3D models, the VR Centre allows OIL to gain a deeper understanding of intricate subsurface structures, offering substantial advantages over traditional two-dimensional interpretation techniques. The advanced analytical capabilities are expected to improve decision-making, optimize exploration strategies, and enhance hydrocarbon recovery.

During the visit, Hardeep Singh Puri emphasized the importance of adopting emerging technologies to strengthen India’s energy sector. He noted that the judicious and intensive use of cutting-edge AI solutions and advanced digital technologies would provide fresh momentum to India’s efforts to increase domestic hydrocarbon production.

The Minister stated that such technological innovations are critical to achieving India’s long-term energy security goals under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Enhanced domestic production of oil and gas, supported by advanced technological interventions, will help reduce import dependence and contribute to building a more resilient and self-reliant energy ecosystem.

The visit underscores the Government’s commitment to promoting innovation-driven growth in the energy sector and leveraging digital transformation to unlock India’s hydrocarbon potential.
