Rear Admiral C. Raghuram (Retd.) Assumes Charge as CMD of Hindustan Shipyard Ltd

Decorated Indian Navy veteran to steer HSL's strategic role in defence shipbuilding and maritime self-reliance

Rear Admiral Chandrasekharan Raghuram, VSM (Retd.), has assumed charge as the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), ushering in a new phase of leadership at one of India’s most strategically significant defence shipyards.

Hindustan Shipyard Limited, a Category-I Miniratna Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) under the Ministry of Defence, plays a crucial role in India’s shipbuilding, ship repair and submarine refit programmes, contributing significantly to the country’s vision of maritime self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Rear Admiral Raghuram succeeds Captain Ganti Venkateswarlu, Director (Shipbuilding), who had been holding the additional charge of CMD following the vacancy in the top position. Earlier this year, the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) recommended Rear Admiral Raghuram’s name for the post, following which the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved his appointment.

A highly decorated officer of the Indian Navy, Rear Admiral Raghuram brings with him decades of distinguished experience in naval engineering, maintenance, logistics and strategic maritime capability development.

Prior to taking over as CMD of HSL, he served as Assistant Chief of Materiel at Naval Headquarters, where he was responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, modernisation and lifecycle support of some of the Indian Navy’s most critical warships and maritime assets.

His appointment is expected to further strengthen HSL’s strategic role in defence shipbuilding, submarine refits, fleet maintenance and indigenous capability development. With India placing increasing emphasis on self-reliance in defence manufacturing and maritime security, HSL is expected to play a pivotal role in delivering advanced naval platforms and supporting the operational readiness of the Indian Navy.

Industry observers believe Rear Admiral Raghuram’s extensive operational and technical experience will help accelerate HSL’s transformation into a globally competitive defence shipyard while reinforcing its commitment to innovation, quality and timely execution of strategic national projects.
