RINL Controversies: No One Named for Guest House Misuse. So Why the Anonymous Defence of a Ministry Official?

These articles have indeed raised serious questions about priorities, governance and expenditure in Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL). One part of the report dealt with the alleged misuse of RINL guest houses.
Notably, we did not name any official of the Ministry of Steel. Nor did we identify the spouse of any official.
And we are not naming anyone even now! That was a conscious editorial decision.
But, at 11:14 PM on July 24, 2026, Indian PSU received an anonymous email from primrose34@yahoo.com. The sender, claiming to be a former General Manager of RINL, chose to remain anonymous but proceeded to identify a senior Ministry of Steel official and his wife, offering an elaborate defence of their actions.

If our report never named the official, why was there such urgency to defend him?
If we never identified his wife, why was there such eagerness to explain her stay at the RINL guest house?
The anonymous email states that the officer’s wife, a senior government officer, stayed at the RINL guest house because her department’s accommodation was not ready, and that she paid the prescribed charges in full, and that her husband, a senior official in the Ministry of Steel, travelled to Visakhapatnam on official Government of India duty.
If these facts are correct, they can be verified through official records.
But that is not the issue.
Indian PSU never alleged otherwise.
The obvious question, therefore, is why an anonymous sender felt compelled to defend individuals who had never been identified in our report. (Though the anonymous person has named an official of the Steel Ministry and his wife too, who he claims to be a government servant, we thought it would be prudent, not to reveal identities as they have been mentioned to us by some anonymous person who is hiding his/her identity for unknown reasons).
The email goes much further. It narrates internal developments within RINL over nearly three years, comments on appointments, procurement decisions, operational strategies, labour issues, production challenges, senior officers, Ministry functioning and even the recent industrial accident.
The sender claims to possess intimate knowledge of RINL’s internal affairs. Then why remain anonymous?
If the sender is indeed a former or working General Manager of RINL, as claimed confusedly, and is confident that every assertion made in the email is truthful, what prevents him or her from coming forward?
- Why not sign the communication?
- Why not disclose one’s identity?
- Why not submit supporting documents?
- Why not place these facts before the nation in one’s own name?
An individual armed with truth ordinarily has little reason to conceal his or her identity while attempting to influence public discourse.
Anonymous communications occupy a different footing. They ask journalists to accept detailed assertions while the sender accepts no responsibility for them.
- Indian PSU does not function that way.
- We welcome factual corrections.
- We welcome documentary evidence.
- We welcome official clarifications.
What we cannot accept is an attempt to reshape a public-interest story through an anonymous email that identifies individuals whom we had consciously chosen not to name.
If the sender genuinely believes that Indian PSU has committed factual errors, the remedy is straightforward: come forward, identify yourself and place the relevant records before the public.
- If the information is correct, it will withstand scrutiny.
- If it is not, anonymity should not become a shield against accountability.
- The email also raises some important questions.
If someone claiming to possess such extensive knowledge of RINL’s internal functioning feels compelled to intervene anonymously, it is in the interest of everyone—including the Ministry of Steel, RINL, employees and the public—that the authenticity of the communication be established.
Should the competent authorities deem it appropriate, they can ascertain the origin of the email in accordance with law. If the sender has acted in good faith and stands by the contents of the communication, there should be no hesitation in establishing that identity.
- Indian PSU has never shied away from scrutiny.
- Neither should those who seek to influence its reporting.
- We shall continue to report on RINL without fear or favour.
Our reports will continue to be guided by documents, facts and public interest—not by anonymous narratives, however elaborate they may be.
