ONGC CMD Race: Seven Become Three?

The race for the coveted Chairman and Managing Director’s post at ONGC is getting hotter — and Delhi’s PSU corridors are already whispering that the field has effectively been reduced to three names.

But the grapevine is telling a different story.

According to chatter in Delhi’s oil and gas establishment, the seven-name shortlist may no longer reflect the real equation. Three names are now being discussed with noticeably greater frequency, fuelling speculation that the contest has entered its final stretch.

Who are these three?

That, for the moment, is the part being kept under wraps.

The intrigue is heightened by the fact that the contest brings together senior executives from Oil India, ONGC, OVL, MRPL and IOC, giving the selection committee a wide field of experience to consider. The final recommendation will be made through the government’s search-cum-selection process.

And there is no shortage of speculation over whether the eventual choice will come from within the ONGC ecosystem or from another oil-sector PSU.

One thing is certain: the next ONGC CMD will inherit one of the most watched leadership positions in India’s energy sector, with the incumbent Arun Kumar Singh’s extended tenure scheduled to end on December 7, 2026.

For now, seven names remain officially in the frame.

Seven are on the paper. Three are in the conversation. One will get the chair. And who emerges mightiest of the “TRIDEV” is the bigger question.
