Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Limited (DGVCL), one of Gujarat’s major electricity distribution companies, has awarded a ₹1,628.74 crore turnkey contract to Rajesh Power Services Limited for modernisation of its electricity distribution network.

The project involves converting existing 11 kV and 22 kV high-tension and low-tension overhead electricity lines into underground cable networks. The initiative is aimed at improving the reliability, safety and resilience of the distribution system while reducing the vulnerabilities associated with conventional overhead power infrastructure.

Under the contract, Rajesh Power Services will undertake the complete scope of work, including design, supply and installation of the underground cabling system. The project is scheduled to be completed within 24 months.

SCADA-Compatible Infrastructure to Strengthen Grid Management

An important component of the modernisation programme is the installation of equipment compatible with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.

SCADA compatibility will support improved monitoring, operational control and automation of the electricity distribution network. This technology can help DGVCL identify faults more efficiently, improve response times and strengthen overall grid management.

The transition to underground cabling is also expected to reduce exposure to weather-related disruptions, accidental damage and other operational risks associated with overhead electricity lines.

Major Investment in Gujarat’s Distribution Infrastructure

The ₹1,628.74 crore project represents a substantial investment in upgrading DGVCL’s existing distribution assets and strengthening electricity supply infrastructure across its operational areas.

The initiative reflects the growing emphasis on modernising India’s power distribution sector through underground cabling, automation and technology-enabled network management.

The project will also add significantly to Rajesh Power Services’ order book, taking it to approximately ₹5,400 crore, according to the company’s disclosed figures. The 24-month execution period will be important for timely delivery of this major infrastructure assignment.
