Chief Minister’s Backing, Executive Lands Top Job

Arrogant as could he be, he is sailing on a political powered boat

SIR JI – In the corridors of power, merit is often claimed to be the only currency that matters. But when an executive’s elevation to one of the most coveted posts in the energy sector is accompanied by whispers of political backing from a Chief Minister of a BJP-ruled state, questions are bound to follow.

The executive has landed the coveted corner office, but the grapevine is buzzing with a more intriguing question: was professional merit enough, or did a powerful political patron help clear the road to the top?

Now comes the real test. Will the new incumbent steer the organisation solely by its institutional mandate, or will the invisible strings of political patronage continue to matter?

In Delhi’s power circles, such questions rarely need to be asked twice. Everyone understands the subtext.

After all, when someone is said to have ridden a Chief Minister’s chariot to the top, the inevitable question is: who will hold the reins once the journey is over?

The appointment may be settled. The gossip, however, has only just begun.
