BCCL Pushes for Forest Clearance to Fast-Track Strategic Muraidih Coking Coal Project
CMD Manoj Kumar Agrawal meets Inspector General of Forests in New Delhi to expedite Stage-I clearance for long-pending project

Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) has stepped up efforts to secure the long-awaited Stage-I forest clearance for its strategically important Muraidih Colliery project, with Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) Manoj Kumar Agrawal holding a key meeting with Inspector General of Forests (IGF) R. Raghu Prasad at the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) in New Delhi on Thursday.
The meeting, held at Indira Paryavaran Bhawan, focused on expediting the forest clearance process for the forest land required for the Muraidih Colliery under BCCL’s Barora Area. Senior officials discussed the project’s technical, environmental and strategic significance, with emphasis on facilitating timely approvals.
The Muraidih Colliery project is regarded as one of BCCL’s most significant mining ventures. However, coal production has remained stalled for a prolonged period due to the absence of the mandatory forest clearance.
Once operational, the project is expected to produce around 20 million tonnes (20 MT) of coal over an estimated mine life of nine years. The mine will produce W-IV grade prime coking coal, a key raw material for India’s steel industry, helping reduce the country’s dependence on imported coking coal.
With India’s steel production expanding rapidly and demand for domestic coking coal rising, the project assumes considerable strategic importance. Its commissioning is expected to enhance BCCL’s production capacity, improve the company’s financial performance, and contribute significantly to national energy security.
The project is also expected to generate employment, increase government revenues, strengthen Coal India Limited’s coking coal portfolio, and support the Government of India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by boosting indigenous coking coal production.
The meeting is being seen as a significant step towards accelerating regulatory approvals and bringing the long-pending project closer to implementation.
