BCCL Commences Production at Salanpur-AGKC Project, Strengthens India’s Coking Coal Capacity

New mine expected to boost domestic coking coal production, support steel sector and reduce import dependence

In a significant step towards enhancing India’s self-reliance in coking coal production, Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has commenced production at the Salanpur-AGKC Project. The development marks another milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen domestic availability of the critical raw material required for steel manufacturing.

The commencement of production at the Salanpur-AGKC project is expected to substantially augment BCCL’s coking coal production capacity. Coking coal remains an indispensable input for the steel industry and several allied sectors, making the project strategically important for India’s infrastructure and industrial growth.

The project is aligned with the Government of India’s broader vision of enhancing domestic production of critical minerals and reducing dependence on imported coking coal. India continues to import a significant portion of its coking coal requirements to meet the growing demand of its expanding steel sector. Increased production from BCCL is expected to help bridge this gap while improving raw material security for domestic steel producers.

Officials believe that the operationalisation of the Salanpur-AGKC project will not only strengthen BCCL’s production portfolio but also contribute to Coal India Limited’s long-term strategy of increasing indigenous coking coal output. The project is expected to support the country’s ambitious steel production targets while reinforcing the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in the mining and energy sectors.

Besides enhancing production, the project is also expected to generate employment opportunities and stimulate economic activity in the region through improved mining operations and associated infrastructure development.

With demand for steel projected to grow steadily over the coming years, projects such as Salanpur-AGKC assume strategic importance in ensuring a stable and reliable domestic supply of coking coal, thereby reducing India’s vulnerability to fluctuations in international coal markets.
