BCCL, CCL Supplying Coal Directly to Nearby Power Plants
The direct-supply mechanism becomes particularly important during the monsoon
Coal India subsidiaries Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) and Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) are directly supplying coal to power plants located in and around their respective mining areas, ensuring regular fuel availability for nearby thermal power generation.
The arrangement enables power plants in the Jharkhand coal belt to source coal directly from nearby mines, reducing dependence on long-distance coal movement and helping maintain continuity of supplies.
CCL, which operates extensively across Jharkhand’s Ramgarh, Hazaribagh, Bokaro and Chatra coalfields, is supplying coal to several nearby thermal power stations. BCCL, with its operations concentrated in the Dhanbad coal belt, is also supplying coal to power plants in its vicinity.
The direct-supply mechanism becomes particularly important during the monsoon, when heavy rainfall can affect mining operations, road connectivity and railway movement. Local sourcing allows power plants to remain connected to nearby coal-producing areas and helps reduce the logistical distance between the mine and the generating station.
The two CIL subsidiaries are accordingly playing an important role in maintaining coal movement to nearby power plants, with dispatches being coordinated according to the requirements of the generating stations.
For CCL and BCCL, supplying nearby power plants also represents a more efficient use of the regional coal network, allowing coal produced in the surrounding mining areas to move directly to consumers located close to the source.
With thermal power continuing to account for a major share of India’s electricity generation, maintaining uninterrupted coal movement remains critical. The direct supply from CCL and BCCL to nearby plants provides an important link between coal production and power generation, particularly in Jharkhand.
