Coal India, AMNS Sign MoU to Explore Coal Gasification and CCUS at Paradip
The partnership will assess the feasibility of producing syngas through coal gasification and integrating Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) to support cleaner industrial operations
Coal India Limited (CIL) and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Private Limited (AMNS) have signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly explore the utilization of syngas from a proposed coal gasification facility at or adjacent to the AMNS Paradip Pellet Plant, integrated with Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) technology.
The collaboration marks a significant step toward advancing cleaner coal utilization and supporting India’s transition to more sustainable industrial processes.
Under the MoU, both organizations will initially undertake a comprehensive assessment of the project’s technical, commercial, and implementation aspects. The study will culminate in the preparation of a Preliminary Feasibility Report (PFR) to evaluate the project’s viability and define the roadmap for potential execution.
The proposed initiative aims to leverage coal gasification technology to produce syngas, which can be used as an alternative industrial fuel and feedstock while incorporating CCUS solutions to reduce carbon emissions. The project aligns with the Government of India’s vision of promoting cleaner coal technologies, reducing the carbon footprint of heavy industries, and strengthening energy security.
The partnership combines Coal India’s expertise in coal resources with AMNS India’s capabilities in steel manufacturing, creating opportunities for innovative and sustainable industrial solutions.
If found feasible, the project could emerge as a landmark example of integrating coal gasification with carbon capture technologies, supporting India’s decarbonization objectives while ensuring efficient utilization of domestic coal resources.
