Coal India Limited (CIL) registered a strong operational performance in October 2026, with coal production rising 19.3% year-on-year and offtake increasing 18.7%, according to the company’s provisional performance data.
Coal production stood at 67.24 million tonnes (MT) in October, compared with 56.4 MT in the corresponding month last year. Offtake, which represents coal supplied or dispatched to consumers, rose to approximately 70.3 MT from 59.2 MT a year earlier.
The increase in both production and offtake signals a substantial improvement in the company’s monthly operating performance, with dispatches exceeding production during the month.
October Performance Provides a Stronger Monthly Showing
The October figures represent a marked improvement over Coal India’s cumulative production trend.
Production of 67.24 MT was approximately 10.84 MT higher than in October 2025. Meanwhile, offtake increased by approximately 11.1 MT year-on-year.
The stronger monthly performance will be important as the company works towards its annual production and supply objectives for FY2026-27. Its ability to maintain output growth and meet consumer demand will remain a key operational priority in the coming months.
Focus on Sustaining the Momentum
Coal India’s performance is significant for India’s domestic coal supply chain, particularly given the importance of reliable fuel availability for power generation and industrial consumption.
While October’s double-digit growth in both production and offtake is encouraging, the relatively low cumulative production growth indicates that the company will need to sustain its improved monthly performance to achieve stronger year-on-year growth for the full financial year.
The coming months will therefore be crucial in determining whether the October surge translates into a sustained improvement in Coal India’s overall production performance.
