NMDC Unearths 27.29-Carat Gem-Quality Diamond at Panna Mine

Diamonds are forever and NMDC has found another one. The company has recovered a 27.29-carat gem-quality diamond from its Diamond Mining Project at Majhgawan in Panna, Madhya Pradesh, making it the second-largest diamond ever produced by NMDC at the site.
The diamond was recovered on September 15, shortly after NMDC produced a 13.16-carat gem-quality diamond from the same project in July.

Located around 15 km southwest of Panna town, the Majhgawan Diamond Project commenced diamond production in 1971-72. It is India’s only mechanized diamond mine.
The project has an ore processing plant equipped with a heavy media separation unit and an X-ray sorter for diamond separation, besides a system for disposal of tailings.
NMDC is a Navratna public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Steel and India’s largest producer of iron ore. The company operates mechanized iron ore mines in Chhattisgarh and Karnataka and produces more than 50 million tonnes of iron ore annually.
NMDC has set an ambition of reaching an iron ore production capacity of 100 million tonnes by FY2030.
Its mining complexes have received five-star ratings from the Indian Bureau of Mines for mining practices. The company also operates an R&D Centre in Hyderabad, recognised as a Centre of Excellence by UNIDO.
