Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) reported a 20% year-on-year increase in net profit to ₹12,076 crore for the second quarter ended September 2026, compared with ₹10,053 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

The state-run life insurer’s total income increased to ₹2,62,739 crore during the quarter, supported by strong growth in premium collections.

Net premium income registered a 16.2% increase to ₹1,47,018 crore, primarily driven by a significant surge in single premium collections.

Single premium income jumped 35%, indicating increased contributions from policies involving one-time lump-sum payments. Renewal premium income also maintained its growth momentum, rising 5.2% to ₹68,375 crore.

Decline in First-Year Premium Income

Despite the growth in overall premium income, LIC reported a 3.7% decline in first-year premium income, which stood at ₹10,432 crore during the quarter.

The decline points to moderation in new policy acquisitions, particularly in regular premium business. First-year premium collections remain an important indicator of new business generation and the insurer’s ability to expand its customer base.

Improvement in Asset Quality

LIC also reported an improvement in its asset quality during the quarter.

The Gross Non-Performing Asset (GNPA) ratio improved to 1.16%, compared with 1.21% in the previous quarter, indicating a reduction in the proportion of non-performing assets.

The Q2 performance reflects growth in LIC’s profitability and premium collections, although the decline in first-year premium income remains an important trend to watch in the coming quarters.
