Northern Coalfields Limited: Black Diamond, Blacker Stains – “Kya Daag Acche Hain”?

Coal India’s biggest grosser is producing more than coal. From alleged hi-tech coal theft and unexplained cash and gold to the arrest of former CMD Bhola Singh, Northern Coalfields Limited is facing questions over whether corruption has become a recurring stain.
Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) is Coal India’s powerhouse — a major contributor to production, revenue and India’s energy security. But behind the millions of tonnes of coal lies a darker trail of controversies.
At Bina Project, a sophisticated electronic device was reportedly discovered on a coal weighbridge, allegedly capable of manipulating coal weights. The episode raised questions about possible coal theft and what happened after the device was detected.
At Jayant Project, police reportedly recovered ₹9 lakh and around 850 grams of gold after a theft at a dumper operator’s residence. The operator reportedly claimed the money belonged to an NCL Deputy Manager (Mining), raising questions over its source and ownership.
And then came Bhola Singh, the former NCL CMD, whose arrest and subsequent proceedings have brought allegations of disproportionate assets and proceeds of crime into the spotlight.
These are allegations and legal proceedings, not a final judicial finding of guilt.
But the accumulation of cases raises an uncomfortable question:
Is NCL’s black diamond merely blackening the hands and faces of those who mine it — or is corruption leaving its own stain on the organisation?
For NCL, the challenge is no longer just to produce more coal.
It is to demonstrate that the wealth generated by that coal is protected by systems strong enough to keep corruption at bay.
Black Diamond should be a symbol of NCL’s strength — not a metaphor for the stains surrounding it.
