NTPC Joins Hands with Africa50 to Develop Power Projects, Explore Electricity Trading Opportunities Across Africa

For Africa50, the collaboration offers access to NTPC's experience in large-scale power generation and project management

NTPC Limited is preparing to expand its international footprint with a new partnership aimed at developing power-generation projects and exploring cross-border electricity trading opportunities across Africa.

NTPC signed a cooperation agreement with Africa50 on October 15, 2026, to identify, assess and develop commercially viable power projects across the continent. The agreement brings together NTPC’s engineering, project execution and operational capabilities with Africa50’s infrastructure development, investment structuring and financing expertise.

The partnership is expected to explore opportunities in mutually agreed African countries, with the objective of mobilising investment, expanding electricity supply and strengthening regional power trade. However, the agreement does not specify individual project locations, the proposed investment amount or an implementation timeline.

NTPC to Bring Technical Expertise, Africa50 to Facilitate Investments

Under the proposed collaboration, NTPC will assess project feasibility, develop technical solutions and support the implementation of identified opportunities. Africa50 will draw on its infrastructure project pipeline and relationships with governments and regulators to identify priority projects, structure them for investment and facilitate their development.

The arrangement could provide NTPC with a platform to explore new markets beyond India while leveraging Africa50’s regional network to assess commercially viable opportunities.

The focus will extend beyond power generation to cross-border electricity trading, an area with potential to strengthen regional energy connectivity and improve the utilisation of power infrastructure across participating African countries.

Partnership Aims to Unlock New Markets

NTPC Chairman and Managing Director Gurdeep Singh said the collaboration would combine the company’s technical and operational experience with Africa50’s project development capabilities and relationships across the continent.

Africa50 Group Chief Executive Alain Ebobisse said the partnership would help translate public-sector ambitions into investment-ready power projects, supporting industrial growth, regional electricity trade and job creation.

Africa50 has 39 shareholders, including 34 African countries, the African Development Bank and other financial institutions. Its presence across the continent could help the partnership identify opportunities and navigate the institutional and investment requirements of different markets.

NTPC Targets 149 GW Capacity by 2032

The Africa initiative comes as NTPC pursues an ambitious expansion strategy. The company has an installed capacity of more than 91.5 GW across conventional and renewable energy sources and has set a target of reaching 149 GW by 2032, including 60 GW of renewable energy.

Its broader business expansion encompasses renewable energy, energy storage, power trading and consultancy, alongside its established power-generation operations.

Developing projects overseas could offer NTPC additional avenues for growth, provided the opportunities meet its commercial and investment criteria. The Africa50 agreement creates a framework for identifying such projects, although the scale and financial contribution of any eventual investments will depend on the projects selected and taken forward.

A New Avenue for India’s Power Sector

The agreement represents a fresh opportunity for an Indian public-sector power utility to explore infrastructure development in African markets through a partnership that combines technical execution with project financing and investment development.

For NTPC, the immediate task will be to identify viable projects, evaluate risks and convert prospective opportunities into executable investments. For Africa50, the collaboration offers access to NTPC’s experience in large-scale power generation and project management.

The partnership’s commercial significance will become clearer as specific projects, investment commitments and implementation schedules emerge.
