The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a monetary penalty of Rs 1.56 crore on Punjab National Bank (PNB) for non-compliance with operational guidelines governing currency chests.

PNB disclosed the penalty on October 29, 2026, in a regulatory filing with the stock exchanges. The penalty amounts to Rs 1,56,53,000.

Non-Compliance with Currency Chest Guidelines

The penalty relates to non-compliance with the RBI’s Master Directions governing the operation of currency chests.

Currency chests are facilities maintained by designated banks to store and distribute currency on behalf of the RBI. Banks operating these facilities are required to comply with the central bank’s prescribed operational procedures.

Financial Impact Limited to Penalty

According to the regulatory disclosure, the financial impact on PNB is limited to the amount of the penalty. The bank has reported the development under the applicable disclosure requirements for listed companies.

The latest action adds to a series of monetary penalties imposed on PNB during 2026 for non-compliance with currency chest operational guidelines.

Earlier, the bank disclosed separate RBI penalties totalling Rs 8.59 lakh in October and additional penalties in August for similar operational lapses.

The latest penalty puts the spotlight on regulatory compliance and operational oversight at one of India’s largest public sector banks.
