POWERGRID Strengthens India’s Renewable Energy Transmission Network with Major Projects in Rajasthan and Karnataka

New transmission systems to facilitate evacuation of 22.5 GW of renewable energy and strengthen national grid connectivity

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, has strengthened India’s renewable energy transmission infrastructure with the commissioning of major transmission systems in Rajasthan and Karnataka, supporting the integration of large-scale clean energy into the national grid.

The two projects are designed to facilitate the evacuation of a combined 22.5 GW of renewable energy, enhancing the country’s ability to transmit electricity generated from renewable energy zones to consumption centres.

Rajasthan Project to Evacuate 20 GW of Renewable Energy

POWERGRID has commissioned the transmission system for the evacuation of 20 GW of renewable energy from Rajasthan under Phase-III, Part-C1. The project became commercially operational with effect from September 22, 2026, with the commercial operation notification received on October 11.

The project includes a 765/400 kV substation at Ramgarh, a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) for voltage management, and an approximately 186-km, 765 kV double-circuit transmission line connecting Ramgarh to Bhadla-III, along with associated bay extensions.

With an estimated asset value of around ₹1,796 crore, the project will strengthen transmission capacity for renewable energy generated in Rajasthan, a major centre for utility-scale solar power development.

The additional infrastructure is expected to support reliable power evacuation, improve grid management and facilitate the integration of variable renewable energy into the national transmission network.

Karnataka’s Bidar Solar Zone Gets 2,500 MW Transmission System

POWERGRID has also commissioned the transmission scheme for the 2,500 MW Solar Energy Zone in Bidar, Karnataka, with effect from October 5, 2026.

The project includes a 765/400/220 kV pooling substation, transformer capacity at the 765/400 kV and 400/220 kV levels, and a 765 kV double-circuit transmission line connecting Bidar to Parli in Maharashtra.

The project strengthens the evacuation infrastructure for solar power generated in Karnataka and improves transmission connectivity between the Southern Grid and Maharashtra.

The commissioning of the Bidar project marks another step in developing the transmission backbone required to accommodate the growing share of renewable energy in India’s electricity mix.

Strengthening India’s Clean Energy Transition

The commissioning of these projects highlights the critical role of transmission infrastructure in India’s renewable energy expansion. While solar and wind generation capacity continues to grow, efficient evacuation and reliable grid connectivity remain essential to ensure that clean electricity reaches consumers.

POWERGRID has been expanding its interstate transmission network through new substations, high-voltage transmission lines and advanced grid-management equipment to meet the requirements of emerging renewable energy zones.

The company’s projects in Rajasthan and Karnataka will contribute to improving renewable energy evacuation capacity, supporting interregional power flows and strengthening the reliability of the national electricity grid.

As India advances towards its clean energy ambitions, investments in robust transmission infrastructure will remain central to integrating renewable generation at scale and supporting long-term energy security.
