Rally By Visakhapatnam Steel Plant Displaced Persons
About two thousand displaced persons led by Visakha Ukku Nirvasita Aikya Sangham and Visakha Ukku Nirvasita Contract Labour Union organised a rally from Kurmannapalem Junction to the Admin Building on today at 8.00 am.
These persons also staged a dharna in front of the Admin Building from 9.00 am, demanding to stop proposed privatization of RINL-VSP and for providing permanent employment to displaced persons as promised to them earlier. They also submitted a memorandum to the management raising the same issues.
It was way back in the late 70s that 22,000 hectares of land was acquired for construction of the huge project of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) which is popularly known as the Vizag Steel Plant and Rs. 2500 per hectare had been given as compensation to land owners. Some 16,000 persons had been displaced from the area on promise of a job to one person of the family. The displaced families were each given 110 square yard of land and some housing loan to construct a new house for them, elsewhere.
Till date, only 8,000 jobs have been provided to such persons non-executive class i.e. at the post of senior or junior trainees and the rest still await to be enrolled as employees of the PSU.
