5 Kg FTL Cylinder Sales Remain Strong; Govt Assures Uninterrupted Fuel Supply Amid West Asia Tensions

The Ministry of Coal has also directed Coal India Limited and Singareni Collieries Company Limited to supply additional coal to states for distribution among small and medium consumers

The sale of 5 Kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders continues to show strong momentum across the country, with over 17.83 lakh cylinders sold since April 1, 2026. Notably, more than 81,000 cylinders were sold in a single day, reflecting sustained demand, particularly among migrant and low-income households.

At the same time, the Government has accelerated the expansion of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections. Since March, 5.27 lakh new PNG connections have been gasified, while infrastructure is already in place for an additional 2.60 lakh connections, taking the total potential to 7.87 lakh connections. Additionally, 5.97 lakh new customers have been registered, indicating robust consumer interest in cleaner fuel alternatives.

Fuel Supply Stable Across India

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has reassured citizens that retail fuel outlets are operating normally nationwide, with no disruption in the availability of petrol, diesel, LPG, PNG, or CNG.

Amid evolving geopolitical developments in West Asia, the Ministry emphasized that comprehensive measures are in place to maintain uninterrupted supply chains.

Public Advisory: Avoid Panic Buying

The government has issued a clear advisory urging citizens to remain calm:

  • Avoid panic buying of petrol, diesel, and LPG
  • Rely only on official sources and avoid rumours
  • Prefer digital LPG booking platforms instead of visiting distributors
  • Consider alternative fuels like PNG, electric, or induction cooking
  • Practice energy conservation in daily usage

Priority Supply and Strategic Measures

To ensure equitable distribution and uninterrupted supply, the government has implemented several measures:

  • 100% supply ensured for domestic LPG, PNG, and CNG (transport sector)
  • Commercial LPG prioritized for:
    • Hospitals
    • Educational institutions
    • Key industries including pharma, steel, automobile, agriculture, and seeds
  • Supply of 5 Kg FTL cylinders doubled for migrant labour based on early March consumption levels

Additionally, supply-side and demand-side rationalisation steps include:

  • Enhanced refinery production
  • Increased LPG booking interval:
    • Urban areas: 21 to 25 days
    • Rural areas: up to 45 days
  • Promotion of alternative fuels such as kerosene and coal

The Ministry of Coal has also directed Coal India Limited and Singareni Collieries Company Limited to supply additional coal to states for distribution among small and medium consumers.

Push for Cleaner Energy Transition

States have been advised to actively facilitate new PNG connections for both domestic and commercial users, aligning with India’s broader push toward cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.
