Haridwar’s Rishikul to Become Major Centre for Ayurveda, Yoga and Indian Knowledge Tradition
Dhami directed officials to divide the project into clearly defined phases, establish specific targets and ensure that all work is completed within two years
The historic Rishikul campus in Haridwar is set to be transformed into a major centre for Ayurveda, Yoga and India’s traditional knowledge systems, with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami directing officials to complete the proposed development project within two years.
Dhami reviewed the proposed master plan for the overall development of the Shri Madan Mohan Malaviya Oriental Research Institute, Rishikul, at his residence on Friday. During the meeting, officials presented the proposed structure and various activities planned for the institute.
The Chief Minister said Rishikul should emerge as a prominent centre for Ayurveda, Yoga and Indian knowledge traditions, with special emphasis on medical tourism, astrology and Vedic mathematics. He called for high-quality educational, research and study facilities in these fields, enabling the institute to connect India’s traditional knowledge with modern research.
AYUSH, Yoga and Sanskrit to shape Rishikul’s identity
Dhami said AYUSH, Yoga and Sanskrit are key identities of Devbhoomi Uttarakhand and should be prominently reflected in the development of the Rishikul campus.
He directed that the institute should offer an excellent environment for education, research and study in Indian knowledge systems, Eastern sciences, Ayurveda and Yoga. The proposed facilities are expected to strengthen Rishikul’s role as an academic and research hub while also showcasing India’s intellectual and cultural heritage.
Traditional architecture with modern infrastructure
The Chief Minister called for a distinctive architectural identity for the campus, based on Eastern and traditional architectural forms.
While the exterior design and facades of the buildings should reflect ancient Indian architectural traditions, the campus should be equipped with modern infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities.
Dhami said the development should strike a balance between tradition and modernity, ensuring that the central concept of the project is reflected throughout the complex.
Haridwar’s spiritual heritage to be central to the project
The Chief Minister emphasised that the Rishikul campus should provide visitors with an opportunity to experience Indian culture, knowledge and spirituality.
He noted that Haridwar has a special religious and spiritual significance because of the Ganga and attracts devotees and tourists from across India and around the world. The unique character of Haridwar, he said, should therefore form an integral part of the Rishikul development concept.
Visitors should be able to learn about and experience India’s rich traditions of Ayurveda, Yoga, spirituality and indigenous knowledge, turning the campus into an important destination for both education and cultural engagement.
Integrated centre for Yoga, Ayurveda and Vedic studies
According to the proposed master plan, Rishikul will be developed as an integrated centre covering Yoga and meditation, advanced academic activities, Ayurveda and holistic health, Indian philosophy, Vedic and classical studies, art and culture, and research.
The plan envisages holistic development of the campus, including academic infrastructure, Yoga and meditation facilities, Ayurvedic medicine and wellness facilities, and spaces dedicated to Indian knowledge and cultural traditions.
