Status Update: Recovery And Data Examination From AI-171 Black Boxes
All actions have adhered strictly to national laws and international aviation protocols

Following the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI-171, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), in accordance with ICAO Annex 13 and Indian regulations, launched a prompt investigation. A multidisciplinary team, including representatives from India’s AAIB, the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), aviation medicine, and ATC, was formed on 13 June 2025.
Black Box Recovery:
- The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) was recovered on 13 June from a rooftop near the crash site.
- The Flight Data Recorder (FDR) was found in debris on 16 June.
- Both devices were securely stored under 24×7 police and CCTV surveillance in Ahmedabad.
Transport & Data Extraction:
- On 24 June, both black boxes were securely flown to AAIB Lab, Delhi via IAF aircraft.
- Data extraction began the same day with AAIB and NTSB experts.
- The memory module from the CVR was accessed and downloaded on 25 June.
Current Status:
Analysis of the CVR and FDR is in progress to reconstruct the incident timeline and determine contributory factors. All actions have adhered strictly to national laws and international aviation protocols.
