Indian Navy Signs Contract With BEL For Implementation Of NMDA Project
Project to Enhance Maritime and Coastal Security through Integrated Information Sharing

The Indian Navy has signed a significant contract with M/s Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru for the implementation of the National Maritime Domain Awareness (NMDA) Project. This initiative aims to bolster maritime and coastal security by establishing a unified and integrated framework for data collation, analysis, and information sharing among diverse maritime stakeholders.
The contract was signed in the presence of Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff, and Manoj Jain, Chairman and Managing Director of BEL.
The NMDA project involves a major technological upgrade of the existing National Command, Control, Communication and Intelligence (NC3I) Network into a more advanced NMDA Network. A key feature of this transformation will be the incorporation of AI-enabled software solutions to enhance situational awareness and decision-making capabilities.
As part of the project, the Information Management and Analysis Centre (IMAC) located in Gurugram—currently the nodal hub of the NC3I Network—will be upgraded into a Multi-Agency NMDA Centre. This upgraded centre will house representatives from various national security and intelligence agencies, thereby fostering greater coordination and real-time information sharing.
The project will be executed on a ‘Turnkey Basis’ and will be administered by the Indian Navy.
This strategic initiative is expected to significantly improve India’s maritime surveillance capabilities and enhance national security in the maritime domain.
