SAIL Powers Landmark Railway Connectivity in Northeast India with Bairabi–Sairang Project

The Bairabi–Sairang line marks a major milestone in expanding rail connectivity in the Northeast

Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL), a Maharatna company and India’s leading steel producer, has supplied nearly 15,000 metric tonnes of high-quality steel for the 51-km-long Bairabi–Sairang railway project in Mizoram, inaugurated today by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

For this strategically important project, SAIL contributed around 10,000 metric tonnes of R-260 grade prime rails from its flagship Bhilai Steel Plant, while another 5,000 metric tonnes of plates, TMT bars, and structural steel were supplied from its Bokaro, Rourkela, Durgapur, Burnpur, and Bhilai plants.

The Bairabi–Sairang line marks a major milestone in expanding rail connectivity in the Northeast, strengthening integration of the region with the rest of the country. SAIL’s comprehensive steel supply once again underscores its role as a trusted partner in nation-building, delivering strength and durability for critical infrastructure.

Over the years, SAIL has played a pivotal role in the development of Northeast India by supplying steel for railways, hydroelectric projects, border infrastructure, and power projects. Its contribution to the Bairabi–Sairang railway project adds to its legacy of enabling landmark national initiatives such as the Chenab Railway Bridge, Atal Tunnel, Bandra–Worli Sea Link, Dhola Sadiya Bridge, Bogibeel Bridge, and the Jiribam–Tupul–Imphal Broad Gauge Project.
