SAIL Fuels INS Androth with Indigenous Steel, Strengthening India’s Maritime Self-Reliance
The specialized steel was sourced from SAIL’s Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela Steel Plants

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), the country’s largest public sector steelmaker and a Maharatna company, has supplied the entire requirement of special-grade steel for INS Androth, commissioned into the Indian Navy today. This milestone highlights India’s advancing naval modernization and self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
INS Androth is the second vessel in the series of Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) corvettes, following INS Arnala, which was commissioned on June 18, 2025.
SAIL has supplied the complete quantity of special-grade steel—comprising HR Sheets and Plates—for all eight ASW-SWC vessels, including INS Arnala and INS Androth, being constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), Kolkata. The specialized steel was sourced from SAIL’s Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela Steel Plants.
The commissioning of INS Androth stands as a testament to India’s growing maritime capabilities and reinforces the vision of “Aatmanirbhar Bharat”, underscoring the strength of indigenous industry in supporting national defense infrastructure.
