CMD BCCL Pays Tribute to Martyred Miners on 50th Remembrance Day of Chasnala Mine Tragedy
Chasnala mine disaster is said to be the darkest chapter in Indian mining history, in which 375 coal miners were martyred

Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) Chairman-cum-Managing Director, Shri Manoj Kumar Agrawal, on Friday paid heartfelt tributes to the martyred coal miners on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the historic Chasnala mine accident, one of the most tragic incidents in India’s mining history.
The solemn tribute ceremony was held at Shaheed Smarak Chowk, Coal Nagar, where CMD Manoj Kumar Agrawal saluted the supreme sacrifice of the miners who lost their lives in the line of duty. Director (Human Resources), Murali Krishna Ramaiah, along with senior officials and employees of Coal Bhawan Headquarters, were present on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Agrawal described the Chasnala mine disaster as the darkest chapter in Indian mining history, in which 375 coal miners were martyred. He emphasised that remembering the Chasnala tragedy is not merely a ritual but a reminder of the collective responsibility towards mine safety and the welfare of miners.
“Paying tribute to these brave sons of the soil is a symbol of our gratitude and moral responsibility. Their sacrifice continues to guide us in strengthening safety practices and ensuring the well-being of the mining fraternity,” the CMD said.
He also expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased miners and acknowledged their resilience and perseverance over the decades.
The Chasnala mine accident, which occurred on December 27, 1975, was caused by massive flooding deep inside the Chasnala Colliery during the first shift, claiming the lives of 375 miners. The tragedy remains the worst mining disaster in the country’s history.
All officers and employees present at the programme paid floral tributes and observed two minutes of silence in memory of the martyred miners.
