NHAI Discontinues KYV for Cars on New FASTags from February 1, 2026
The new rules also apply to FASTags sold through online platforms, ensuring that all verification is completed upfront

In a major relief for highway users, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the discontinuation of the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for cars (Car/Jeep/Van category) on all new FASTags issued from February 1, 2026.
The decision aims to eliminate post-activation inconvenience faced by vehicle owners despite having valid documents. For existing car FASTags, KYV will no longer be mandatory as a routine requirement and will be carried out only in complaint-based cases, such as incorrect issuance, misuse, or loose FASTags.
To maintain system integrity, NHAI has strengthened pre-activation verification norms for issuer banks. FASTag activation will now be allowed only after mandatory VAHAN-based validation of vehicle details. The earlier practice of post-activation validation has been discontinued. In exceptional cases where VAHAN data is unavailable, banks must verify details using the Registration Certificate (RC) before activation, with full accountability.
The new rules also apply to FASTags sold through online platforms, ensuring that all verification is completed upfront. The reform shifts responsibility entirely to issuer banks and is expected to make the FASTag ecosystem more citizen-friendly, transparent, and grievance-free.
