Satish Chandra Dubey Inaugurates Re-Operations of Rajhara Open Cast Colliery

CCL’s Rajhara project to boost regional employment, energy security and sustainable mining

Union Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Satish Chandra Dubey, today inaugurated the re-operations of Rajhara Open Cast Colliery of Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), marking a significant step towards strengthening India’s coal production and regional development.

The inauguration ceremony witnessed tree plantation, lighting of the ceremonial lamp, and traditional rituals to welcome the dignitaries, reflecting CCL’s commitment to sustainability and local culture.

Addressing the gathering, Satish Chandra Dubey said, “Coal burns itself to illuminate the nation, and our coal workers serve the country in every circumstance. We are not limited to coal production alone; we are working in a planned manner towards environmental protection, greenery and employment for local youth.”

He highlighted that overburden (OB) is no longer treated merely as waste, with research underway to explore critical minerals within it. Emphasising logistics efficiency, the Minister noted that First Mile Connectivity (FMC) has significantly reduced coal loading time by enabling direct dispatch through railway wagons. “The coal industry will play a crucial role in fulfilling the energy needs of a developed India,” he added.

The Minister further underlined Coal India’s strong CSR commitment, stating that priority is being given to education, healthcare and social development. Flagship initiatives such as ‘Nanha Sa Dil’, ‘CCL ke Lal’, ‘CCL ki Ladli’ and JSSPS are creating new opportunities for children and youth in coal-bearing regions.

Speaking on the occasion, Palamu Member of Parliament V.D. Ram said, “Rajhara Colliery is dedicated to the people of this region. This project will act as a catalyst for employment, development and social upliftment. CCL will continue to work consistently in the interest of the people and the area.”

Chairman-cum-Managing Director, CCL, Nilendu Kumar Singh, expressed gratitude to the Minister and said, “The strong public participation, especially the presence of women, reflects the deep emotional connect and public faith in Rajhara Colliery. CCL remains fully committed to regional development.”

During the programme, CMD Nilendu Kumar Singh welcomed the Hon’ble Minister and the MP by presenting bouquets and coconuts.

Senior officials present included Director (HR) Harsh Nath Mishra, Director (Technical/Operations) Chandra Shekhar Tiwari, Rajhara GM Manish Kumar, along with senior officers, employees, public representatives, union members and a large number of local citizens.

Project Details

  • Coal mining at the Rajhara Open Cast Colliery will be carried out using the excavator-dumper combination.
  • Peak production capacity: ~5 lakh tonnes per annum
  • Mineable coal reserves: 4.925 million tonnes
  • Coal grade: G-9
  • Mining life: Approximately 18 years or more
  • Total mining area: 736.36 hectares

The re-operation of Rajhara Open Cast Colliery is expected to make a significant contribution to regional economic growth, employment generation and strengthening India’s energy security.
