Who Will Lead RINL? CMD Interviews on March 14 Amid Revival vs Disinvestment Debate

At present, Manish Raj, Director (Mining) at Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), is holding the additional charge of CMD of RINL

The Search-cum-Selection Committee (SCSC) will conduct interviews for the post of Chairman and Managing Director of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) on March 14, 2026.

At present, Manish Raj, Director (Mining) at Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), is holding the additional charge of CMD of RINL.

Sources indicate that 14 candidates have been shortlisted for interviews for this key leadership position at the state-owned steelmaker.

Policy Uncertainty Over RINL’s Future

For several months now, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited—popularly known as the Vizag Steel Plant—has been caught in a policy limbo, with conflicting signals from the government raising serious questions about its future.

Earlier, in responses to RTI applications and parliamentary questions, the Ministry of Steel had stated that no revival plan was in place for the PSU and reiterated the government’s commitment to strategic disinvestment of the company.

However, after assuming office, Union Steel Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy visited Visakhapatnam and publicly ruled out privatisation of RINL. Subsequently, the government announced a special revival package for the company.

Financial Stress and Structural Challenges

Meanwhile, the company continues to face an acute cash crunch, struggling to meet routine financial obligations such as servicing bank interest and paying employee salaries. Funding support remains uncertain even as operational challenges persist.

Industry observers note that one of RINL’s major structural disadvantages is the absence of captive iron ore mines, which significantly affects its cost competitiveness compared with other integrated steel producers.

Trade unions have long demanded either a merger with Steel Authority of India Limited or a mega consolidation of all steel PSUs to create a level playing field for Vizag Steel.

So far, neither proposal has moved forward.

Key Question Ahead

Against this backdrop, the decision to initiate CMD recruitment through the SCSC mechanism has only deepened the uncertainty around the PSU’s future.

The development raises a fundamental question for industry watchers: Is RINL being prepared for revival, or is it merely being kept operational while strategic disinvestment remains the long-term objective?
