RINL Union Seeks Steel Ministry’s Intervention on Retirees’ Medical Scheme
It warned that nearly 8,000 retirees, many elderly and financially constrained, would be severely impacted, as the existing scheme is their primary healthcare support

The Visakha Steel Employees Union of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) has urged the Ministry of Steel to immediately intervene in the proposed changes to the post-retirement medical scheme for retired employees.
In a representation to Secretary, Ministry of Steel, the Union expressed concern over plans to introduce a contributory medical insurance model—reportedly on the lines of Steel Authority of India Limited—from April 1, 2026, without prior notice or consultation.
It warned that nearly 8,000 retirees, many elderly and financially constrained, would be severely impacted, as the existing scheme is their primary healthcare support.
The Union termed the move non-transparent and hasty, especially with the current scheme set to expire on March 31 and the proposal reportedly being placed before the Board just a day earlier.
It also opposed selective comparison with SAIL, arguing that parity must include wages, benefits, and structural support—not just contributory medical provisions.
Seeking urgent action, the Union has requested the government to maintain the existing scheme, avoid unilateral changes, and ensure any new policy provides equal or better benefits without burdening retirees.
Call for RINL–SAIL Merger
Adding another dimension to the issue, Katam SS Chandra Rao, Deputy Secretary General of NCOA, told www.indianpsu.com that it is “regrettable” that RINL adopts SAIL policies only when they are adverse.
