SAIL Powers INS Taragiri with Indigenous Special Steel, Boosting India’s Naval Self-Reliance

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise, has played a pivotal role in strengthening India’s defence capabilities by supplying indigenous special steel for the commissioning of INS Taragiri.
The warship, the fourth vessel under the Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) stealth frigates, was officially inducted into the Indian Navy on April 3, 2026. It has been constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited using approximately 4,000 tonnes of special grade steel plates supplied entirely by SAIL.

The specialised steel was produced at SAIL’s integrated steel plants located in Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela. These facilities have demonstrated advanced metallurgical capabilities and stringent quality standards required for strategic defence applications.
SAIL has consistently supported India’s defence indigenisation efforts and remains aligned with flagship government initiatives such as Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India. The company has previously supplied critical steel components for major naval platforms, including the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and the earlier Project 17A frigates—INS Nilgiri, INS Himgiri, and INS Udaygiri.
The successful induction of INS Taragiri marks another significant milestone in India’s journey toward self-reliance in defence manufacturing. It also underscores the vital contribution of domestic steel producers in enhancing the nation’s maritime strength and strategic capabilities.
