Online LPG Bookings Surge to 98%; Govt Ensures Uninterrupted Fuel Supply Amid Strait of Hormuz Concerns

India-flagged LPG vessel Jag Vikram has safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz and is expected to arrive at Kandla port on April 14, 2026, carrying approximately 20,400 MT of LPG

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has assured that fuel supplies across the country remain stable, even as geopolitical tensions impacting the Strait of Hormuz continue to pose global challenges.

Online LPG bookings have surged to nearly 98–99% across the industry, reflecting a strong shift toward digital platforms, while domestic LPG cylinder deliveries remain normal and uninterrupted nationwide.

Strong Supply Position, No Shortages

The government confirmed that:

  • No LPG dry-outs have been reported at distributorships
  • Most LPG distributors operated even on Sunday to ensure timely deliveries
  • Delivery Authentication Code (DAC)-based deliveries have reached about 92%, improving transparency and preventing diversion

Consumers have been urged to avoid panic buying and rely only on official information sources.

Massive Crackdown on Hoarding

Enforcement agencies have intensified action against black marketing:

  • Over 1.28 lakh raids conducted since March 2026
  • More than 59,000 cylinders seized
  • Over 1,000 FIRs registered and 238 arrests made

Additionally, PSU Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have penalised 219 LPG distributorships and suspended 56.

Government Measures to Stabilise Supply

To maintain equilibrium between supply and demand, the government has:

  • Increased refinery output and LPG production
  • Extended booking intervals to 25 days (urban) and 45 days (rural)
  • Prioritised LPG supply for households, hospitals, and essential sectors
  • Boosted availability of 5 kg cylinders for migrant workers

Commercial LPG supply has been restored to about 70% of pre-crisis levels.

Push for Alternate Fuels

Citizens are being encouraged to shift towards alternative energy sources such as:

  • PNG (Piped Natural Gas)
  • Electric and induction cooking
  • Kerosene and coal (for interim relief)

States have also been directed to accelerate PNG connections, with over 4.32 lakh new PNG connections activated since March 2026.

Fuel Prices and Retail Availability

Despite a spike in global crude prices:

  • Retail fuel outlets are operating normally
  • No increase in petrol and diesel retail prices
  • Excise duty reduced by ₹10 per litre to shield consumers

Maritime Update: LPG Vessel Nearing India

In a key development, the India-flagged LPG vessel Jag Vikram has safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz and is expected to arrive at Kandla port on April 14, 2026, carrying approximately 20,400 MT of LPG.

Authorities confirmed that all Indian vessels and seafarers in the region remain safe, with continuous monitoring by the government.

Public Advisory

The government has reiterated:

  • Avoid panic buying of fuel and LPG
  • Use digital booking platforms
  • Conserve energy
  • Stay alert against misinformation

Overall, the Centre maintains that India’s fuel supply chain remains resilient, with adequate stocks and robust coordination between the Centre, States, and industry stakeholders to ensure uninterrupted availability.
