Coal Production Begins at Urtan & Dhirauli Mines, Boosting India’s Energy Security

The operationalisation of these two mines is expected to enhance domestic coal availability and strengthen the country’s energy security

India’s push towards energy self-reliance has received a significant boost as the Ministry of Coal announced the commencement of coal production from the Urtan and Dhirauli coal mines in Madhya Pradesh.

The operationalisation of these two mines is expected to enhance domestic coal availability and strengthen the country’s energy security, while reinforcing the broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat in the energy sector.

The Urtan Coal Mine, located in the Anuppur district, has been allocated to JMS Mining Private Limited. Coal production from the mine commenced on 15 May 2026, marking a historic milestone as it becomes the first underground coal mine to begin production under the commercial coal auction regime. This development is being seen as a landmark in India’s ongoing coal sector reforms.

In another key development, the Dhirauli Coal Mine in the Singrauli district has also commenced production. Allocated to Mahan Energen Limited, the mine began operations on 17 May 2026. The Singrauli region, already known as India’s energy capital, is expected to further consolidate its position with the addition of output from Dhirauli.

The launch of production at these mines highlights the success of the government’s progressive reforms, including simplified procedures, transparent auction mechanisms, and a strong push for private sector participation. These initiatives have significantly improved operational efficiency and ease of doing business in the coal sector.

With rising energy demand across industries and power generation, the increased output from Urtan and Dhirauli will play a crucial role in reducing coal imports, ensuring stable supply, and supporting sustained economic growth.
