NTPC CMD Gurdeep Singh Likely to Get Another Service Extension as Successor Search Continues
Government may opt for continuity in leadership at India's largest power producer amid ongoing Search-cum-Selection Committee process

NTPC Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Gurdeep Singh is likely to receive another extension in service beyond July 31, 2026, as the government continues its search for a suitable successor to lead India’s largest power generation company, sources familiar with the developments informed www.indianpsu.com.
Singh, who has been at the helm of NTPC since 2016, was granted a one-year extension last year after the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) failed to recommend a suitable candidate for the top post. His current tenure is scheduled to end on July 31, 2026.
Industry observers believe that the ongoing Search-cum-Selection Committee process for identifying the next CMD has yet to reach its final stage. Given the strategic importance of NTPC in India’s energy transition and power security agenda, the government may prefer continuity in leadership until a suitable candidate is finalized and approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
Under Gurdeep Singh’s leadership, NTPC has significantly expanded its generation capacity, strengthened its renewable energy portfolio, diversified into green hydrogen, battery energy storage systems, e-mobility, and other emerging energy segments. The company has also maintained its position as India’s largest integrated power utility while aggressively pursuing its net-zero and sustainability goals.
Sources indicate that the government is keen to ensure a smooth transition at NTPC, particularly at a time when the company is executing some of the country’s most ambitious clean energy and infrastructure projects. In the absence of a finalized successor, an additional extension for Singh is being viewed as a practical option.
The CMD position was advertised earlier through the Search-cum-Selection route after the previous selection process did not yield a suitable candidate. While several senior executives from NTPC and other central public sector enterprises are understood to be in the fray, no formal announcement regarding the appointment of a new CMD has been made so far.
A final decision on the matter is expected closer to the completion of Singh’s current tenure. Any extension or fresh appointment will require approval from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
If granted, the extension would allow Gurdeep Singh to continue steering NTPC through a critical phase of expansion and energy transition, reinforcing continuity in leadership at a time when the company is playing a pivotal role in India’s power sector transformation.
