BHEL CMD Race: Eight Executives to Be Interviewed on October 23

It seems to be an open contest with four BHEL insiders and four outside candidates

The race for the top post at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has entered a decisive phase, with eight executives shortlisted for interviews on October 23, 2026. The shortlist comprises four senior BHEL executives and four candidates from other public sector enterprises, setting the stage for a closely watched contest for the leadership of one of India’s largest heavy-engineering companies.

The selection comes ahead of the scheduled retirement of incumbent CMD K. Sadashiv Murthy on February 28, 2027. There can be no denying that under CMD K. Sadashiv Murthy, BHEL has made a remarkable turnaround, moving from the red to impressive profits.

Leadership Choice at a Critical Juncture

BHEL’s next CMD will take charge at a crucial stage for the company, which has a significant role in India’s power-generation equipment, transportation and heavy-engineering sectors.

The incoming chief will face the challenge of accelerating project execution, improving operational efficiency, strengthening manufacturing performance and converting the company’s substantial order book into timely deliveries and revenue.

The selection will also test the relative merits of internal experience and leadership drawn from other public sector enterprises. While BHEL’s internal candidates have direct knowledge of the company’s operations and business challenges, the external candidates offer experience gained in different organisational and industrial settings.
