India’s Peak Power Demand Falls to 234 GW; Coal Stock Concerns Persist

The key question is whether India's power demand is undergoing a temporary seasonal correction or a broader slowdown

India’s peak electricity demand has eased to around 234 GW in the second half of October 2026, down from approximately 260 GW recorded on October 5, indicating a significant moderation in demand after a period of heightened pressure on the country’s power sector.

The decline of around 26 GW represents a reduction of approximately 10% from the early-October peak. The easing has coincided with lower cooling requirements as weather conditions change, reducing electricity consumption by air conditioners and other cooling equipment.

However, the decline in peak demand does not necessarily indicate a comparable fall in overall electricity consumption. Peak demand represents the maximum power requirement at a particular time, while total electricity consumption depends on demand throughout the day.

Coal Availability Remains a Concern

Despite the recent moderation in electricity demand, coal stocks at thermal power plants remain under scrutiny. Coal inventories reportedly declined from 18.6 million tonnes at the end of September to approximately 17.5 million tonnes on October 21.

The continuing pressure on coal stocks raises questions about the pace of replenishment at thermal power stations, particularly if electricity demand rises again in the coming weeks.

Coal-based generation remains critical to India’s electricity supply. Any sustained increase in demand, particularly if hydropower generation remains weak, could put additional pressure on coal consumption and plant inventories.

Will Lower Demand Help Rebuild Coal Stocks?

The easing of peak demand could provide some relief to thermal power plants by moderating the immediate pressure on coal consumption. However, a recovery in inventories will depend on whether domestic coal production and dispatch are sufficient to meet the requirements of power stations.

For Coal India and other domestic coal producers, the coming weeks will be important in determining whether the reduction in electricity demand translates into improved coal stock positions at power plants.

A meaningful assessment of the demand trend will require a comparison of daily peak demand, total energy requirement, actual electricity supplied and coal-based generation against the corresponding period last year.
