Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tata Power Company Limited to develop 110 kV power infrastructure for its Petro Resid Fluidised Catalytic Cracking Unit (PRFCCU) project at the Mumbai Refinery.
The proposed infrastructure will cater to the facility’s estimated power requirement of 90 MW. The combined investment by BPCL and Tata Power is estimated at approximately ₹250 crore, with completion expected over 24 months, subject to necessary approvals and project milestones.
Dedicated Power Infrastructure for PRFCCU
Under the agreement, Tata Power will provide 110 kV connectivity and undertake the design and development of the associated electrical infrastructure required to support the PRFCCU facility.
The project will strengthen power connectivity for one of BPCL’s major ongoing refinery investments while reinforcing the electricity transmission network serving Mumbai’s industrial belt.
Reliable power supply is critical for large-scale refinery operations, where uninterrupted electricity supports complex processing units and associated facilities.
BPCL’s ₹14,203 Crore Refinery Project
The PRFCCU project has a processing capacity of 3 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and an estimated investment of ₹14,203 crore.
It is BPCL’s second-largest project currently under implementation and the largest project undertaken at its Mumbai Refinery.
The facility is designed to improve the recovery of higher-value products from petroleum residues, supporting BPCL’s strategy of petrochemical diversification and enhanced value addition.
The project is also expected to strengthen domestic processing capabilities and contribute to India’s energy security.
Trombay Transmission Network to Get a Boost
The proposed 110 kV infrastructure will also strengthen Tata Power’s transmission network in the Trombay area, where electricity demand from industrial consumers and other large-load developments is expected to grow.
The company plans to further expand its transmission infrastructure in the area through a proposed 400 kV transmission facility over the next five years.
The planned expansion is expected to enhance power evacuation capacity and improve grid infrastructure serving Mumbai’s industrial and commercial consumers.
Strategic Significance for Mumbai’s Energy Infrastructure
The agreement brings together two major players in India’s energy sector to support the infrastructure requirements of a large-scale refinery expansion.
For BPCL, the proposed power connectivity will support the electricity requirements of its strategically important PRFCCU project. For Tata Power, the development forms part of its broader effort to strengthen transmission infrastructure and cater to growing industrial demand in Mumbai.
The project highlights the importance of coordinated investments in electricity networks and petroleum refining infrastructure as India expands its domestic energy-processing capabilities.
