Auto LPG Sales Jump 59% in April; Government Assures Fuel Supply

Over 34,200 PNG consumers have voluntarily surrendered LPG connections through the MYPNGD.in portal

Amid evolving geopolitical tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has assured citizens of uninterrupted supply of petroleum products and LPG, while urging restraint against panic buying.

In a significant trend, average Auto LPG sales by PSU Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have surged to 282 MT/day (till April 14, 2026) from 177 MT/day in February 2026, indicating a sharp shift towards alternative fuels.

Additionally, over 34,200 PNG consumers have voluntarily surrendered LPG connections through the MYPNGD.in portal, supporting demand rationalisation efforts.

Government Urges Public to Stay Calm, Avoid Panic Buying

The Ministry has issued a public advisory urging citizens to:

  • Avoid panic purchase of petrol, diesel, and LPG
  • Rely only on official sources for information
  • Use digital LPG booking platforms instead of visiting distributors
  • Shift to alternate fuels like PNG, electric and induction cooking
  • Conserve energy in daily consumption

Supply Measures Strengthened Across Sectors

To ensure stability, the Government has taken multiple steps:

  • 100% supply ensured for Domestic LPG, PNG, and CNG (transport)
  • Priority allocation of commercial LPG to hospitals, educational institutions, and critical sectors such as pharma, steel, automobile, agriculture, and seeds
  • Supply of 5 Kg FTL cylinders doubled for migrant workers
  • Refinery production ramped up to maintain stock levels

Booking intervals have also been revised:

  • Urban areas: Increased from 21 to 25 days
  • Rural areas: Extended up to 45 days

Push for Alternate Fuels and Coal Supply

To ease LPG demand pressure:

  • Alternate fuels like kerosene and coal are being made available
  • The Ministry of Coal has directed Coal India Limited and Singareni Collieries Company Limited to supply additional coal to states
  • States have been advised to accelerate PNG connections for domestic and commercial consumers

LPG Supply Status Remains Stable

  • No dry-outs reported at LPG distributorships
  • Online bookings have reached ~98%
  • DAC-based deliveries at ~93%, ensuring transparency and preventing diversion
  • LPG cylinder deliveries continue normally against bookings
