The Bokaro Steel Diploma Holders’ Workers’ Union (BIDU) has raised a range of issues concerning workplace safety, healthcare, basic amenities, financial benefits and career advancement for employees working in the Blast Furnace (BF) department of Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL).

The union held a departmental meeting at the Oxygen Plant canteen to discuss employees’ long-pending grievances and review the progress of a memorandum of demands previously submitted to the plant management. The meeting was jointly chaired by union organising secretary Pappu Yadav and treasurer Sonu Shah.

Employees shared their concerns about working conditions and highlighted the need for timely intervention by the management to improve workplace safety, healthcare facilities and employee welfare.

Dust Pollution and Workplace Safety Under Focus

Excessive spread of dust in the Blast Furnace area emerged as a major concern during the meeting. Employees pointed to the potential health risks arising from dust exposure and called for effective measures to control pollution in the workplace.

The union demanded that all dust exhaust fans be operated efficiently at full capacity. It also called for the early installation of an Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) system in the Blast Furnace area to provide a more effective and lasting solution to the dust problem.

The meeting also highlighted the need to ensure a regular supply of high-quality dust masks to employees working in the demanding industrial environment.

Demand for Hardship Allowance and Basic Amenities

Considering the difficult working conditions in the Blast Furnace department, employees raised the demand for a hardship allowance to adequately recognise the nature of their work.

The union also stressed the need to improve basic amenities within the department, including the construction of clean toilets and adequate arrangements for supplying safe drinking water, particularly during the summer months.

The employees called for these essential facilities to be treated as a priority rather than allowing the associated problems to persist.

Employees Seek Revision of Incentive and Reward Formula

The existing incentive and reward formula was another key issue discussed at the meeting. Employees called for practical changes to ensure that the incentive structure adequately reflects their efforts and contributions.

The union also emphasised the importance of skill development, career progression and better opportunities for professional advancement. It stressed that addressing these concerns would help improve employee morale and provide greater clarity regarding future career prospects.

Better Medical Facilities at Bokaro General Hospital Sought

The meeting also focused on the need to improve healthcare facilities at Bokaro General Hospital (BGH), which serves employees and their dependants.

The union demanded air-conditioned wards and the provision of new, modern beds to improve patient comfort and treatment facilities.

It also sought priority treatment for employees in the hospital’s outpatient department (OPD), with the objective of reducing waiting times and ensuring more convenient access to medical services.

The union maintained that healthcare facilities for employees and their families constitute an important aspect of employee welfare and require appropriate attention from the management.
