Dream, they do come true ‘When I was a kid, I first saw Kunjurani Devi, the sports looked so appealing. I was baffled at how she was lifting such heavyweights. So I told my parents that I wanted to do this, with much reluctance they agreed. I saw Kunjurani Devi’s performance in the at the 2004 Olympics and dreamt of podium glory’ – Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, told me in an interview while I was researching for my book, She Dared, Women in Indian Sports. Today, on 24th July 2021, she fulfilled her dream with the podium finish. Mirabai became the first Indian ever in the history of the game to win medal for the country in the first day of the event. 27 year old girl from Nongpok Kakching, Imphal East from the state of Manipur, won silver medal in the 49- kg category. She had a poor Rio Olympics 2016, but was optimistic of fulfilling her dream one day. Before her, Karnam Malleshwari, won bronze medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
This gives billion Indians the hope of the biggest ever Indian contingent aiming for best ever performance in terms of medals in the history of the game. As the day two of the Tokyo Olympics 2020, started today it will be not wrong to say oil sector will be fuelling India’s growth story. Seven from ONGC are representing India this year at the Tokyo Olympics. From the oil and gas industry 21 athletes are participating in the Summer Olympics this year.
Amongst the sportspersons from ONGC are tennis star Ankita Raina, shuttler B Sai Praneeth, shooter Apoorvi Chandela and national hockey players Mandeep Singh, Gurjant Singh and Sumit. Ankita Raina is current number one Indian player in women’s singles and doubles. The 28- year tennis star is the first player from Gujarat to qualify for the Olympics. Her big moment of glory came in the 2018 Asian Games where she clinched the bronze medal. She became only the second Indian women player to do so after Sania Mirza.
Shooting star Apurvi Chandela is representing India in 10 M air rifle shooting since 2012, being the longest playing sportsperson with amazing consistency. In 2019 Apurvi was ranked number one and holds the world record in her name till date. Indian women shooters, however had a poor start at the Tokyo Olympics as the first timer Elavenil Valaverian and Apurvi Chandela failed to qualify for the finals of the 10 M air rifle event.
International hockey player Mandeep Singh won bronze medal in Odisha’s men’s world league finals in Bhubaneswar in 2017 and gold medal in the Hero Asian Champions Trophy in Oman in 2018 Gurjant Singh and Sumit Kumar are the other two from ONGC representing Indian hockey team in the Games Indian hockey team ranked fifth in the Games opened their campaign with victory against Newzealand early morning today.
