NALCO, NLC India Sign JV for 1,080 MW Thermal Power Project at Angul
The strategic partnership reinforces the government's push for energy self-reliance and capacity expansion through public sector collaboration

In a major step towards strengthening India’s energy security and supporting the expansion of the country’s aluminium sector, Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, witnessed the signing of a Joint Venture Agreement between NALCO and NLC India Limited for the establishment of a 4×270 MW (1,080 MW) coal-based thermal power plant at Angul, Odisha.
The proposed power project is expected to ensure reliable and uninterrupted power supply for NALCO’s expanding aluminium operations while contributing significantly to India’s industrial development. Besides meeting the growing energy requirements of the aluminium sector, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities, promote regional economic development, and strengthen the country’s energy infrastructure.
The Joint Venture marks a strategic collaboration between two leading public sector enterprises and reflects the Government of India’s continued focus on enhancing domestic energy capacity and supporting core industries through sustainable infrastructure development.
The initiative aligns with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to build an Atmanirbhar Bharat by strengthening energy security, promoting self-reliance, and accelerating industrial growth through robust public sector partnerships.
The 1,080 MW thermal power project is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting India’s long-term energy requirements while reinforcing the strategic importance of the public sector in nation-building.
