NHAI Pushes for Vehicle Repair and Puncture Service Facilities at Wayside Amenities on Highways

NHLML directs WSA operators to establish repair and puncture service centres to improve commuter convenience, road safety and freight mobility

In a move aimed at enhancing commuter convenience and strengthening roadside support services, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has directed the development of Vehicle Repair Shops and Puncture Repair Facilities at Wayside Amenities (WSAs) located along National Highways and Expressways across the country.

The directive has been issued by the National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), a wholly owned company of NHAI, which has advised its field offices to encourage WSA lessees to prioritize the establishment of these facilities at the earliest.

The initiative seeks to improve the overall travel experience on National Highways by ensuring timely mechanical assistance to motorists and freight operators during vehicle breakdowns and emergencies. It is expected to reduce vehicle downtime, enhance road safety, and minimize inconvenience caused by unexpected mechanical failures.

According to NHAI, there is a growing need for vehicle repair and puncture repair services on several National Highway and Expressway corridors. The availability of such facilities will help commuters receive prompt assistance, avoid delays, and ensure safer journeys.

NHLML is currently developing a nationwide network of modern Wayside Amenities under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model on a long-term lease basis. Under existing concession agreements, operators are permitted to develop several additional facilities beyond the mandatory amenities prescribed for each WSA. Vehicle repair and puncture repair services are among the approved facilities under the contractual framework.

The Wayside Amenities are being developed as integrated service hubs catering to the needs of both passenger and commercial vehicle users. Apart from offering essential traveler services, these facilities are expected to support logistics operations and improve efficiency along key transportation corridors.

The latest initiative aligns with NHAI’s broader vision of creating world-class highway infrastructure and delivering seamless mobility services across the country. It also reinforces the authority’s commitment to building safe, efficient and user-centric National Highway corridors that contribute to economic growth and meet the evolving needs of road users.
