RINL Woes Deepen: Visakhapatnam Steel Plant Records Historic Low Coke Oven Pushings, Production Declines Further

Fresh production figures point to mounting operational stress as key performance indicators continue to weaken across the steelmaking chain

Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited seems to be sliding downwards with passage of every day. The operational crisis at Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL) appears to be intensifying, with production slipping further as the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant recorded its lowest-ever overnight Coke Oven pushings.

According to production figures available for yesterday, Coke Oven pushings dropped to just 115, marking the lowest level in the history of the steel plant. The sharp decline has once again highlighted the severe production challenges confronting RINL amid continuing concerns over raw material availability and operational sustainability.

The plant reported Hot Metal production of 12,800 tonnes, while the Steel Melting Shop (SMS) produced 73 heats, with each heat yielding approximately 150 tonnes of liquid steel.

Industry observers believe that the historic fall in Coke Oven pushings is a critical indicator of stress in the upstream production process. Since coke is an essential input for blast furnace operations, any sustained decline in coke production can significantly impact hot metal output and the overall steel production cycle.

The latest figures come at a time when employees and trade unions have repeatedly expressed concern over the future of the Navratna steelmaker, urging the Government of India to take urgent measures to ensure uninterrupted availability of raw materials, improve capacity utilisation and restore normal production levels.

The continuing decline in production is likely to add to the concerns of employees, suppliers and other stakeholders, who have been closely monitoring developments at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant.
