SCSC to Hold Interviews for NTPC CMD on July 4; Successor to Gurdeep Singh Likely Soon

18 candidates in the fray as Search-cum-Selection Committee begins process to identify the next head of NTPC

The Search-cum-Selection Committee (SCSC) will conduct interviews on July 4, 2026, to select the next Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NTPC Limited, paving the way for a leadership transition at the country’s largest power producer.

The selection assumes significance as the tenure of incumbent CMD Gurdeep Singh is scheduled to end on July 31, 2026. Singh, who has led NTPC since 2016, was granted a one-year extension last year after the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) did not recommend any candidate for the top post. The new CMD is expected to assume charge from August 1, 2026.

According to sources, the SCSC has shortlisted 18 candidates for the coveted position. The list includes 11 Executive Directors from major energy sector PSUs such as NTPC, Indian Oil Corporation Limited, GAIL (India) Limited, Power Grid Corporation of India Limited and Power Finance Corporation, along with three serving Directors from NTPC, Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited and Indian Oil. The shortlist also includes a few candidates from the private sector, including former Tata Power Managing Director Deepesh Nanda.

The recruitment process was revived after the PESB, following interviews held in May 2025, did not recommend any candidate for the position. The Ministry of Power subsequently invited fresh applications between February 28 and March 28, 2026, following which the Search-cum-Selection Committee was tasked with identifying suitable candidates.

After completing the interviews, the SCSC will recommend its choice to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), which will take the final decision on the appointment.

The next CMD will take charge at a crucial juncture for NTPC as the company continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio while strengthening its conventional generation capacity, modernising thermal assets, and pursuing initiatives in green hydrogen, battery storage and other clean energy technologies. The new leadership will also be responsible for ensuring reliable and affordable power supply amid rapidly growing electricity demand across the country.
