Uttar Pradesh Approves ₹33,000 Crore Meja Thermal Power Expansion Project in Prayagraj!
The upcoming Meja Stage II project is expected to add 2,400 MW of generation capacity through three units of 800 MW each

The Government of Uttar Pradesh has cleared a major thermal power expansion proposal worth approximately ₹33,000 crore in the Prayagraj district, marking a significant step toward strengthening the state’s energy infrastructure amid rising demand.
Major Capacity Addition Under Meja Stage II
The upcoming Meja Stage II project will add 2,400 MW of generation capacity through three units of 800 MW each. The expansion will be developed as a joint venture between NTPC Limited and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited, with equal equity participation from both entities.
The investment is expected to be deployed over a five-year period, reflecting a long-term commitment to meet the state’s growing electricity needs.
Approval Process Underway
The proposal has already received clearance from the state energy task force and is set to be placed before the cabinet led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for final approval.
Existing Meja Project and Financial Backing
The Meja Stage I project, consisting of two units of 660 MW each, is already operational. Earlier, the board of NTPC Limited approved additional equity support of around ₹3,173 crore for the second phase, reinforcing its commitment to the expansion.
Rising Power Demand in Uttar Pradesh
The expansion comes as Uttar Pradesh prepares for a surge in electricity consumption. Official estimates indicate that peak power demand could reach 33,375 MW in June 2026, while the state aims to ensure availability of around 34,000 MW.
According to Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited, nearly 80% of peak demand will be met through long-term power purchase agreements. The remaining requirement is likely to be fulfilled through power trading platforms such as Indian Energy Exchange, Power Exchange India Limited, and Hindustan Power Exchange.
Parallel Push for Renewable Energy
Alongside thermal expansion, the state continues to accelerate its renewable energy initiatives. Speaking at the UP-Energy Expo 2026, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak highlighted that over 52,000 solar plants were installed in April alone.
Additionally, more than 4.8 lakh rooftop solar systems have been installed across 75 districts under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Yojana.
Outlook
The proposed Meja Stage II project is expected to play a crucial role in bridging the demand-supply gap and ensuring reliable power availability in Uttar Pradesh, as the state gears up for sustained economic growth and increasing energy consumption.
